Design
The TomTom ONE is the company's entry-level product and their first that is designed for maximum portability. Weighing just 5.6 ounces and measuring a compact 1.0 by 3.8 by 3.2 inches, it still sports a large 3.5-inch screen that's quite viewable even in bright sunlight. The TomTom ONE is based on the ultrasensitive SiRF Star III GPS receiver. The SiRF Star III acquires satellites quickly, and the sensitive receiver keeps track of your position in conditions where earlier-generation receivers would have lost signal completely. TomTom is known for keeping things simple, and that's the case here: The only hardware button is the power on/off switch, located on the top of the unit. All input is done via the touch screen.

Installation
Installing the ONE couldn't be easier. A rotating suction cup mount attaches to the windshield and the ONE clips into it securely. Positioning the mount for easy viewing is a snap, and after some initial setup procedures you'll be up and running.

The mount accommodates an array of connections, including power, an external GPS antenna, an optional RDS-TMC traffic receiver for FM radio-based traffic updates, audio out, and a microphone connector. In addition to a car power adapter, The ONE ships with an external microphone for Bluetooth hands-free calls.

While the ONE does have an internal rechargeable battery, it should be treated as a backup in most cases. TomTom rates its life at 2 hours, which probably helps to keep the size, weight, and cost of the ONE down.



Interface
The ONE's easy-to-read display, logical menu and navigation functions, and excellent voice prompts bring the whole hardware and software package together nicely. You'll feel like you're using a tool intended for the job, not a piece of software cobbled together to run on generic hardware.

The anti-glare display offers a clear 3D view of the road and maneuvers ahead. The screen uses a built-in sensor to adjust to changing light conditions. The navigation screen is split into three sections: The main map display, which shows a three dimensional view of the road and maneuvers ahead; a distance and turn indicator section, which lets you know how far you have to go until your next turn; and a trip computer with odometer, time, and GPS signal information. The bottom of the display also lets you know the name of the street you're on.

A tap of the map brings up the first of three main menu screens, each with five choices. The first entry on the main menu is "Navigate to." This menu has a total of ten choices, including Home, Favorite, Addresses, Recent Destinations, and Points of Interest (POI). If you choose to navigate to a POI, a submenu invites you to choose one near your current location, in a city, near your defined home destination, along your planned route, or near your destination. Finding POIs near you is simple: from the map screen it takes just five screen taps. Once you select, for example, restaurants near your current location, the ONE presents you with a list in ascending distance from your location. You can either select a restaurant, or hit the Find key to bring up the keyboard so that you can enter your search for a name.

Pressing on a section brings up one of three additional interfaces. The most important is the main menu, activated by pressing on the map. This brings up a group of big, friendly icons that let you enter a new destination, find alternative routes, plan routes, activate mobile phone functions, and check traffic conditions, among other features. Pressing on the trip computer lets you delve deeper into your current route, allowing you to view a simulation of the complete route, text-based directions, and detailed map views of the roads ahead. Lastly, pressing the turn indicator brings up a volume control for voice prompts.
