How To Pick A Handheld GPS System

Many people are finding the benefits of having a handheld GPS system with them at all times. What was once a luxury for those who could afford to put it in their car has now become a staple for many to carry in their pockets or purse. A handheld GPS system is very similar to the portable GPS navigation systems you see in many cars except they are smaller and weight less allowing you to carry it around in your pocket. Many people who buys a handheld GPS system are often hikers or rescuers’ who are not in need of street names and locations but need to know their coordinates relative to mountains and terrain. What is nice about handheld GPS devices is that many of the ones that were primarily used for navigation in a car are becoming small enough now to be able to carry them around like a handheld GPS system. Finding the right GPS device requires an understanding of the models and options available and also what your needs are so that you can pick the right GPS system for you.

How To Pick

Before you decide on buying a handheld GPS system you will need to consider a few things. First you will need to decide on the size of the unit. Do you really need a handheld GPS system or are you looking for something that can be used both for walking and in the car? Is size really a factor? Are you going to be taking it hiking with you? Do you need something that can give you coordinates? If you do need a handheld GPS system as opposed to a portable navigation device then you need to find a system that has multi-parallel channels. This type of handheld GPS system uses several satellites to track the device instead of just one that makes it easier to pick up the signals in areas that may block the satellite such as near mountains or in dense forest areas. If you need a handheld GPS system then you should get one that has at least 100 or more waypoints. Waypoints are markers that you can put on your handheld GPS system. It allows you to find the way you came incase you get lost and it will allow you to see if you are traveling in circles or if you are making any progress towards your destination. You will also want a system that will give you the distance and direction as well as several different routes to your destination. This will allow you to pick options in case the first route is blocked by something.
